Mão do bem – Reflections by Sofia Sunden

Can you imagine that this year is already coming to an end!? Looking back over this year I feel in awe of all that we have accomplished with Mão do Bem! We have had so many incredible guests and events! It feels unreal that we managed to pull all of that off in one short year!
We started the year by introducing regular coffee evenings and conversation circles with inspirational speakers, and our first guest was the founder of La Carioca, Flavio Datz. He started the first cevicheria in Rio, which has now grown to three restaurants. Flavio liked us so much that he offered his precious time for a course and mentorship in how to start and run a business in the area of gastronomy. This ran for three months and twelve people were allowed into the small, intimate mentor group. We were so proud to be able to offer that fantastic opportunity! By the end of the day, my dream and aim is that all the seeds we plant in the group through our events, will spark an interest and sprout into something bigger. What that something bigger is will be different for everyone in the group. This mentorship was the seedling for some of our members to get guidance on how to start their own business. The classes in planting vegetables at home have led to that a number of our members have started their own vegetable garden, and me and a few others have started to cook with jackfruit after the course we provided. I adore the whole process of going into the forest, fetching my own healthy fruit, cooking up a feast with it, and I know that a few of the other ladies do the same ever since we had the amazing course with the people from Sinal Do Vale, a beautiful organic farm outside of Rio.

This year we continued to run a number of our activities parallel. We provide three types of activities in Mão do Bem, a handout of food basket, together with a talk or workshop on the broad theme of better health, physically and mentally. We also have coffee evenings with conversation circles, with an invited guest, and we do social events together when everyone can bring their children and family. We meet regularly fortnightly, and due to the social and this mentorship there were three months when we had weekly activities with Mão do Bem. I love when we can offer so many things at the same time!
Reflecting back on what we accomplished, I can’t even pick one thing that I like the most. We have had so many amazing visits and events this year! We have covered how to start a compost, grow vegetables at home, cook with jackfruit and a course in how to start your own business, and inspirational talks of everything from community leader Marcelo Black, the founder of the restaurant chain La Carioca, to the psychologist Sheila and the leader of the NGO Horta na Favela, tending a vegetable garden in the middle of the favela. And even my childhood idol the legendary football player and nowadays Brazilian head coach Pia Sundhage!
We also managed to pull off two big fundraising events, one in a beautiful house in Vidigal with home cooked delicious food and DJs, and an live-broadcasted auction with beautiful arts and even exclusive clothing items from Ruibal, Brazil and vegetarian buffet in the stunning beautiful SoulRebel Rio at the top of Santa Teresa with a beautiful view over Rio!
It has been a very fully packed year, of useful classes, and inspiring speakers, and even a three months mentorship. I am very content with all we managed to achieve this year, and I thank each and everyone who helped us make this happen! Mão do Bem is a big collective effort and I thank you all for your support and help with donations, your precious time, involvement and dedication! Thank you all for what has been and what is still to come! I look forward to see you in 2023!”
